The Josiah Smith Tavern and Old Library Working Group was convened in December of 2013. The purpose of the Working Group is to openly and transparently facilitate and coordinate town efforts to find a reuse for the Josiah Smith Tavern (JST) and Old Library (OL).


Details on the progress of the Working Group can be found under Town Projects, which also includes details on the two recommended reuse proposals and public opportunities to learn more.

The Working Group is charged with:
  • Facilitating communication between Town boards and committees
  • Working with advisors and consultants to the Town
  • Undertaking community outreach to engage residents about potential uses, continued town ownership, the process and specific proposal(s)
  • Providing input to the Board of Selectmen on the final proposal
The Working Group shall consist of:
  • A designated liaison from the Finance Committee to facilitate communication between the Working Group and the Finance Committee
  • Representatives from the:
    • Board of Selectmen
    • Community Preservation Committee
    • Historical Commission
    • Planning Board
    • Traffic and Sidewalk Committee
  • The Town Manager (non-voting member)
  • Up to 5 at-large members, selected to represent a range of views
The Working Group is convened for a period of up to 2 years and members shall serve until such time as they are replaced or the committee is disbanded by vote of the Board of Selectmen.
