Course 215              TENTH GRADE: WORLD HISTORY, 1800 to PRESENT    Full Year 5 Credits

Building upon the 9th grade curriculum, this course emphasizes 19th and 20th century world history.  The course begins by examining the philosophical roots of changes that arose in the 19th century.  The first quarter is organized around the theme of economics and revolutions.  Students will examine the principles of capitalism, socialism, communism and imperialism and their consequences on peoples around the world.  Subsequent themes include war and its aftermath, as well as global issues such as human rights, trade and technology.  These themes center around the essential question for the course: What is a civil society?    Using the themes students will explore the various definitions of a civil society and the complex relations between the individual and the state.  Students will also reflect on what they learn by using the classroom environment as a microcosm of a civil society.  Study skills that are refined include:  expository writing, researching, assessing evidence (sometimes from conflicting sources), appreciating multicultural points of view, debating and making formal presentations.
