In May-June 2004, Honors Physics students worked in small groups to construct a safety cage that would keep an egg intact upon impact when dropped from the height of about 4.5 meters.
While "everybody and their younger sister" is doing it in a science class all across the nation, our students faced very tough restrictions on materials, which made the task quite challenging. Each group was allowed to use 30 plastic stirring straws and one meter of masking tape to build their cage.
The hard work paid off: everybody had fun, ideas (and straws) flew back and forth, the cages looked very different and clever, and most of the eggs got crushed quite spectacularly, to the delight of those assigned to clean up.
