Answer and Discussion

MTM 1-1(Stool):

The best answer is (d)-a drill press, as a drill press is used primarily to make holes with a drill bit at a precise position and depth.

By adjusting the table, it can also be used to make precision holes at an angle.

Discussion of other answers:

  • (a) A band saw is a machine used primarily to make curved saw cuts in wood and plastic. Cuts may be made vertically, or at an angle by tilting the table. A band saw cannot drill holes.
  • (b) A portable power drill is used primarily to make holes in wood, plastic, and other materials in applications such as general construction work where precise angles and depths are less important than versatility. While this tool concievably could be used, it would be difficult without a special drilling guide or jig to make holes at a precise angle, particularily of the size required for a chair leg.
  • (c) A table saw is used for making precise vertical or angled straight cuts in wood or plastics. It cannot make holes.
