Explanation of Terms -Bioengineering

An assistive device, also known as an orthotic, typically aids a functioning or semi-functioning organ. Examples of orthotics include eyeglasses, shoe lifts, or external hand braces.

A device that replaces a natural organ is known as a prosthesis.

Examples include an artificial heart, a heart valve, a cochlear implant, artificial knee, or artificial hand.

A custom device, unlike a mass-produced item, is one that must be specially shaped and molded to fit an individual patient. Examples of custom devices are shoe orthotics or prosthetic eyes or legs.
