Dining Out in Boston: A Culinary History

Thursday, October 12, 2017

Historian Jim O’Connell will draw on his recent book "Dining Out in Boston: A Culinary History" and provide a comprehensive historical overview of the development of Boston’s restaurants. Boston was a pioneer in elaborate hotel dining, oyster houses, French cuisine, ostentatious banquets, ice cream parlors, ethnic cooking, the colonial revival of traditional New England dishes, the “gourmet revolution,” and contemporary locavore and trendy foodie culture. Jim’s talk will feature the development of restaurants in suburbs west of the city. The presentation will be illustrated with an extensive array of historic menus and photos. Jim O’Connell’s other books include "The Hub’s Metropolis: Greater Boston’s Development from Railroad Suburbs to Smart Growth" and "Becoming Cape Cod; Creating a Seaside Resort." This event is brought to you by the Friends of Weston Library.
