FY21 Operating Budget Development Underway


FY21 Proposed Budget Presentations and Discussions

Developing the annual operating budget is a long process that begins in October and ends when residents at Annual Town Meeting vote to approve it. Residents can follow the budget development process through a series of open meetings, which are filmed by Weston Media Center if meeting attendance is not optimal. 

Recommended Budgets

  • The School Superintendent presented a Recommended School Budget to the School Committee on January 13th 
    • The School Committee is anticipated to discuss this recommended budget further in additional meetings in January and February
    • The Budget Hearing to receive public comment on the recommended school budget is February 10th
    • The Chair of the School Committee described the school budget process in an open letter to the community

  • The Town Manager presented a Recommended Operating Budget to the Select Board on January 21st
    • Members of the Board may ask for additional follow up in their February meetings

  • On January 30th, the Finance Committee will kick off a series of weekly meetings where individual sections of the budget will be discussed in greater detail
    • The Town Manager and the DPW will be discussed on Jan. 30th
    • Feb. 6th - Police and Fire budgets
    • Feb. 13th - Recreation and Facilities
    • Feb. 27th - OPEB Trust Fund
    • March 5th - Info. Systems
    • March 12th - Weston Public Schools
    • March 19th - Library/AIC

  • The recommended budgets, presentation documents, and development materials will be posted to the Town’s website at as they become available

Following the Development Process

Residents interested in the deeper details of the Town’s operating budget are encouraged to attend the Finance Committee discussions and review, as well as the meetings of the Select Board and the School Committee when the budgets will be discussed, as well as the School Budget Hearing. All of these meetings are open to the public and are posted on the Town’s online meeting calendar. Residents should subscribe to receive email/text notifications of when the board/committee meetings agendas are posted online to receive official scheduling. The public hearing of the Community Preservation Committee is scheduled for March 23rd at 7:00 p.m. This committee will be meeting every other Monday starting January 27 to discuss FY21 CPA budget requests.

Next Steps

The Warrant and Budget Book will be mailed to each household in April and will also be posted online. This booklet will contain the final recommended operating budget and the reports of the Select Board, School Committee, Community Preservation Committee, and Finance Committee, as well as the Warrant for Annual Town Meeting, which will be called to order on May 11th and is when the budget is approved by voters.
