Weston DPW

The Weston Department of Public Works continued to fulfill its mission to construct and maintain the physical infrastructure that provides for the public's health and safety, to protect the environment, and to enhance the quality of life and ensure that Weston continues to be a desirable place in which to live and conduct business. The following is the weekly report, by division:

Pole work

Administration/Engineering Division


Paving and Roadwork

  • The Brown Street Sidewalk Project construction is currently ongoing. The utility overhead wires are being relocated to new poles on Winter Street, then the old poles will be removed;
  • North Avenue Roadway Resurfacing Work – Pavement markings were installed, and it was noted that the contractor needs to address issues at Lexington Street intersection.  Additional pavement marking work is required at Lexington Street intersection.  Remaining work will include loaming, seeding and final cleanup; 
  • Westland Road and Silver Hill Roads Resurfacing Work  –   Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • Blueberry Hill Road Resurfacing Work – Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • Buttonwood Lane Roadway Resurfacing Work – Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • Ware Road Roadway Resurfacing Work – Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • Boston Post Road Sidewalk Work – Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • Wellesley Street Roadway Resurfacing Work – Remaining work will include loaming, seeding, and final cleanup;
  • School Street Pedestrian Signal at/about Alphabet Lane – Work completed, we are working on minor adjustments;

State/Utility Project Work

  • Overseeing National Grid’s gas relay project on Boston Post Road (from Linwood Road to Church Street).   Temporary pavement restoration work has occurred.  National Grid should be demobilizing from the site by the end of next week; 
  • MassDOT – Route 20 Milling and Resurfacing Project – MassDOT has been made aware of some puddle issues;
  • Route 30 (South Avenue) and Wellesley Street Signal Improvement Project - Eversource has installed the new poles. The moving of overhead utility lines to the new poles has continued.  The removal of existing utility poles is anticipated over the next several weeks.  New signal posts have been installed.  There may be a need for temporary pavement markings and protection of existing utility poles until the overhead utilities have been relocated.

Ongoing Projects

  • Black Oak Pump Station Project is ongoing – Engineering to move the generator and final landscaping and screening underway.  The Town Engineer will conduct an outreach prior to advertising work to be completed;
  • Overseeing consultant work on Cooks Pond Dam and Pump Rehabilitation Project;
  • Consultant proposal and scope for the Paines Hill Water Tank Improvement Project has been completed.  The work on the new building is expected to start soon.

Consultant Work

  • Overseeing consultants’ work on several sidewalk feasibility studies (Merriam Street, Highland Street, and Warren Avenue) – Feasibility plans available for viewing online.  Outreach by the Traffic & Sidewalk Committee has been conducted;
  • Overseeing consultant work on the modification of the Boston Post Road / Wellesley Street intersection study and the Boston Post Road / School Street intersection study;
  • DPW is finalizing the advertising package for construction specifications for railing replacement on Church Street at retaining wall.  Bid opening is scheduled for January 19, 2017;
  • Overseeing consultant design work for drainage work for construction season 2016 (Newton Street and Merriam Street);
  • Overseeing consultant concept / design work for Town Center Project.

Engineering

  • Currently reviewing 11 Stormwater Permits;
  • Currently issued 56 Stormwater permits which also requires construction inspection
Plow

Water Division

  • Completed approximately 35 DigSafes;
  • Performed three weekly samples and station/tank inspections;
  • Continued to read water meters (Cycle 2); 
  • Conducted 5 final meter read(s);
  • Inspected 0 new water service(s);
  • Assisted Highway Division with snow and ice operations;
Town Hall wreaths

Park and Cemetery Division

  • Conducted 1 funeral service;
  • Performed fall cleanup at Town cemeteries;
  • Assisted Highway Division with snow and ice operations;
  • Work has been suspended on Cemetery Conservation contract at Farmers Burial Ground.

Solid Waste and Recycling Division

  • Processed approximately 27 tons of solid waste and 15 tons of recycling;
  • Policed Transfer Station for litter;
  • Picked up trash and recycling at various town buildings;
  • Assisted Cemetery Division with fall cleanup;
  • Assisted Highway Division with snow and ice operations.
Snowplow

Highway/Stormwater Division

  • Assist contractor’s landscape crews;
  • Picked up leaves;
  • Conducted several general sanding operations and plowing operations (snow and ice Operations).

Vehicle Maintenance Division

  • Performed routine maintenance (fluid services, tires and brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, exterior trim work and electrical repairs) on 7 school buses, 1 police vehicle, 13 DPW trucks and other equipment, 0 recreation vehicle(s), and 0 school grounds vehicle(s);
  • Performed 3 major repairs.  S-12 sand shut fabricate, H-15 sander bearing, and S-10 rear brake cans;
  • Performed 8 repairs on sanders/plows;  
  • Assisted the Highway Division with sanding and plowing operations.
