December 4 - 9 2017The Weston Department of Public Works continued to fulfill its mission to construct and maintain the physical infrastructure that provides for the public's health and safety, to protect the environment, and to enhance the quality of life and ensure that Weston continues to be a desirable place in which to live and conduct business. The following is the weekly report, by division:

Administration/Engineering Division Paving and Roadwork
- Fairview / Montvale roads and Newton Street drainage design work has begun and must be completed prior to a roadway reconstruction. We continue to work on drainage designs and necessary easements before roadway work can be planned on Newton Street
State/Utility Project Work- Route 30 (South Avenue) and Wellesley Street Signal Improvement Project - Sign installations completed, final landscaping and final cleanup including removal of work trailers, is anticipated to occur over the next several weeks. Final signal inspection with MassDOT scheduled for December 19th. MassDOT and its contractor are non-committal with schedule to complete;
- National Grid’s gas relay projects:
- Church Street at/about Pigeon Hill Road - project currently on hold;
- Wellesley Street including Bass Pond Road (Rockport Road to town line - ongoing;
- Conant Road / Colchester Road gas main replacements - ongoing;
- Glen Road (Wellesley Street to Cliff Road intersection plus or minus) gas main replacement - anticipated to start after Wellesley Street is complete, which will be deferred till 2018
- Coordinated with Eversource on a number of outstanding issues in Town including double poles, poles guyed into trees, leaning poles and pole guyed with rope (Merriam Street), etc.
- Continuing to coordinate with Eversource as it relates to the proposed rail removal and gravel work within the abandoned railroad bed (Wayside Rail Trail Project). It was anticipated that work in Weston will begin the week of December 4th, but did not. It would appear that work in Weston will be deferred until spring of 2018

Ongoing Projects- Black Oak Pump Station Project – Engineering for generator move and final landscaping and screening is underway. Town Engineer had a neighborhood meeting and is working on the necessary easement. Engineer attended a Conservation Committee meeting;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on Cooks Pond Dam and Pump Rehabilitation Project - Re-advertised bids opened and Engineering is evaluating bids;
- Overseeing consultants’ work on the Southside Drainage Project - Attempting to secure the necessary easements for Phase 2 of the project. Once completed, the permitting will be conducted with construction anticipated for spring 2018. Town Engineer is working on securing necessary easements;
- Paines Hill Water Tank Improvement Project - the project is anticipated to be re-advertised within the next week or two
- Worked with the Town Center Planning Committee and the Town Center Improvement Project consultant in advancing the design decisions for the burying of the utilities. Also worked with Comcast and the Town's fiber work orders
Consultant Work- Overseeing consultants’ work on several sidewalk design projects – Latest plans available for viewing online:
- Warren Avenue Sidewalk Project - DPW has reached out to impacted abutter from whom a required easement is needed;
- Merriam Street Sidewalk Project - several easement issues remain and the project has gone before the Conservation Commission and Planning Board. Several site walks have taken place;
- Ash Street Concept Sidewalk - Overseeing consultants’ work on concept design. Quotes from consultant firms for final design and permitting received. Funding needed;
- Overseeing consultant’s work on the modification of the Boston Post Road / Wellesley Street intersection study and the Boston Post Road / School Street intersection study. Project was submitted to the state for consideration as a TIP project;
- Submitted a Route 30 (South Avenue) roadway reconstruction project to the state for consideration as a TIP project;
- Overseeing consultant design work for drainage work for construction season 2016 (Newton Street, Merriam Street, and Fairview/Montvale roads area). Continue to attempt to secure required easements on Newton Street. Continued to work on design at Fairview and Montvale roads area;
- Overseeing consultant concept / design work for Town Center Improvement Project. Consult is awaiting design decisions from the Town Center Planning Committee on a parking area in front of the Fire Station and retail complex across the street. Consultant has reached out to Eversource and Verizon to incorporate their portions of the work into the design documents;
- Overseeing consultant work on setting up RFPs for Wireless Meter Reading, meter replacements and meter installation (approximately 1700);
- Overseeing consultant design and permitting for Concord Road Culvert replacement which has impacts on the Warren Avenue and Merriam Street culverts. Design is ongoing;
- Continued the Tree Inventory, Assessment, and Recommendations in the field work with the consultant. Four weeks into the program and just under 4,940 public trees on scenic roadways have been inventoried and assessed
Engineering- Currently reviewing 5 Stormwater Permits;
- Currently issued 55 Stormwater permits which also requires construction inspection
Administration
Develop and prepare the FY19 DPW Operating Budget

Water Division- Completed approximately 32 DigSafes;
- Performed weekly samples (3), monthly water samples at tanks, and station/tank inspections;
- Conducted 7 final reads;
- Continue to read water meters cycle two;
- Installed one large meter;
- Conducted repairs to a water main break (Rockport Road) and then flushed hydrants in the area;
- Turned off one water service;
- Oversaw and assisted in the repair of large water service;
- Responded to 0 low-pressure calls;
- Responded to 0 dirty water calls;
- Assisted with snow plow operations on December 9-10

Park and Cemetery Division- 0 cremation interments;
- 2 graves dug with casket interments;
- Installed one monument foundation;
- Cleared leaves at Linwood Cemetery (ongoing activity);
- Installed snow markers in Linwood Cemetery;
- Assisted the Transfer Station with push downs on bins with backhoe as necessary;
- Cleaned and serviced equipment;
- Assisted with snow plow operations on December 9-10

Solid Waste and Recycling Division- Processed 2, 100-yard solid waste dumpsters totaling 35.89 tons;
- Picked up municipal office recycling – 1,260 lbs;
- Picked up Town office and select town park solid waste – 1,080 lbs.;
- Processed 1 cardboard container – 8.1 tons;
- Processed 1 glass container – 6.81 tons;
- Processed 1 plastic container – 0 tons;
- Processed 1 newspaper container – 7.80 tons;
- Ran 2 shuttles for grass/leaves – 9.81 tons;
- Ran 1 shuttle for brush /logs – 3.37 tons;
- Processed 1 metal container – 0 tons;
- Assisted with the pickup of various donations including clothing, electronics, books and bikes – 120 lbs;
- Electronics and appliances w/Freon – 0 tons;
- Processed the pickup of CRT electronics – 0 tons;
- Processed 5 cent deposit bottles and cans – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 rechargeable battery pickup – 0 lbs;
- Processed pickup of medical sharps – 0 lbs;
- Processed 1 pickup of light bulbs – 0 lbs;
- Organized and maintained order in swap shed;
- Cleaned and pumped in the trailer pit as needed;

- Continue snow stake installations- department list;
- Continue sander calibrations and training;
- Install catch basin, leeching structures, and paved swale: Highland Street;
- Respond to miscellaneous calls for service: roadside litter and objects in roadway, illegal sign removal, etc.;

Vehicle Maintenance Division- Performed routine maintenance (fluid services, tires and brakes, exhaust, steering and suspension, exterior trim work and electrical repairs) on 13 school buses, 3 police vehicles, 10 DPW trucks and other equipment, 0 recreation vehicles, and 0 school grounds vehicles;
- Performed 1 major repair on vehicles with Major/Significant maintenance activity: School bus inspection cycle 2;
- Continued 0 repairs on sanders/plows;
- Did assist Highway Division with sanding and/or plowing operations this week
